Managing Benefits

What are my options if I incur expenses before my Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) is activated?

It is a personal decision if you would like to have any early in the year expenses re-processed or reimbursed to apply those costs to your Choice Fund, or HRA. If you wish, you can simply pay it out of pocket and leave it at that, or you can take the necessary steps to get those costs covered once your HRA is active. Once the HRA is loaded, it will begin to pay for out-of-pocket expenses and the amount you paid initially will be counted toward your total out-of-pocket expenses.

For claims billed after a provider visit

If you visit a provider in the final weeks of the 2025-26 plan year or early in 2026-27 and a claim is processed before your HRA is deposited, you can:

  • Submit payment for the claim out of pocket from your personal banking or credit institution
  • Submit payment using your flexible spending account (FSA) if you have one
  • Do nothing and wait until your HRA has been deposited. Then, call Cigna at 800-244-6224 to request the claim be re-processed so it can be drawn from your Choice Fund
